Program Update
February 15,2021
We continue to provide modified programming and will continue to do so through the end of the school year. Due to the pandemic, we are unable to return to in-person programming, but we do hope to resume in-person reading and mentoring again when it is safe to do so.
Here are the programs we are currently providing:
*Power Read Online (PRO): Our students are meeting virtually via computer or tablet with their mentors in a weekly Zoom session managed by their EWI School Coordinator. The student and mentor are monitored by their site-coordinator each week.
**Pen Pal (old fashioned letter writing): These are bi-weekly exchanges between the students and their mentors writing about what they are reading, how they are doing, etc. The EWI School Coordinator facilitates the letter exchanges between the students and mentors. While the students and mentors are not able to share a book in person, their relationships are maintained in this letter exchange.
***Virtual Story Time (VST): This provides students and families videos of special volunteers reading favorite children’s books and stories. This also provides students another option to hear stories and books read aloud on demand in a safe setting that they can access via our EWI YouTube channel. We have provided links to this service and continue to recruit volunteers for VST.
Student Book Distributions are provided at the end of each quarter to all students served regardless of the EWI Program. All students receive new books for their homes. An important objective for our program is to encourage our students to become avid readers outside school. We accomplish this through book giveaways for our students.
Volunteers may engage in any of these opportunities. To learn more, please contact Anna Sunstrom at volunteer@everybodywinsiowa.org.
