Sara Kremer has been a mentor at Crestview Elementary in West Des Moines over the past 3-4 years and is reading in our Power Read online program (via Zoom) with Sonia this year.
Sara is from Northeast Iowa and is an Operations Manager and has been in the mortgage industry for the past 6 years. She and her dog Diezel, read every Tuesday with Sonia. Diezel loves reading days and he is a 12 year old Bichon Frise/Shih Tzu mix. He often wears fun clothing which makes the Power Read session even more fun!
Sara shared that she decided to join EWI as a volunteer reading mentor because, “Reading has always been a favorite pastime and I enjoy passing the love of reading on to the students that I read with.” When she’s not reading or taking her dog to the farmers market, Sara enjoys hosting dinner parties, traveling, and of course, reading!
She also said it’s challenging to pick out one favorite story to share from her mentoring because, “each time is a blast!” She also states, “This year has been a challenging one for everyone, and with the in-person restrictions, it’s been entirely different from in the past. With all the uncertainty, I wasn’t sure we were even going to be able to participate in Power Reading this year and that first day when we finally got to read and see our student’s face via Zoom, that is a day that really sticks out in my memory.”
Sara’s advice for current or future mentors is, “Go for it! This is a wonderful program that anyone who has the opportunity should participate in. I would also like to thank all of the support staff who make this program run so smoothly. Volunteering with Everybody Wins! Iowa is so fulfilling and fun and such a great chance to make a difference. I encourage everyone to volunteer!”
Thank you, Sara for sharing Diezel with Sonia and your ongoing commitment and volunteering with Everybody Wins! Iowa!
