Mentor Moment: Connie Boesen

Connie Boesen, mentor

Connie Boesen says one of Power Read’s greatest strengths is that it’s a volunteer opportunity that “people can do easily.” As Des Moines’ new mayor, that ease will work to her advantage in her role of mentor at Capitol View Elementary School. “I’ll still be at Power Read as often as I can, and I’ll rearrange my schedule around it,” she says. Connie initially got involved with EWI when she helped her church, Central Presbyterian, switch their tutoring program over to Power Read. “It’s the organization of the program that makes it so effective and made it work for us,” she says. “You have the book carts, the sheets to track the reading, the background checks of the volunteers.” Education has long been a passion of Connie’s. “So many of our kids in Des Moines don’t have preschool, so it’s even more important that we get to them early and help them learn to read,” she says. “To have a good outcome, they need a good start.”
