Through our Power Read program, volunteer mentors meet weekly with students to talk, read aloud, and inspire a love of reading. These relationships not only help students improve their literacy skills but also boost their confidence and self-esteem. With 23 programs across 15 locations in communities like Ankeny, Des Moines, Norwalk, Perry, Waukee, and West Des Moines, we currently serve 207 students—and we know many more are waiting for a mentor to change their lives.

During Power Reading Week, we’ll deliver donated books to children in need, thank our incredible volunteers and program sponsors, and invite the community to support our efforts.

Help Us Reach Our Goal

This year, we aim to raise $5,000 to sponsor 10 additional students. It costs just $500 to sponsor a student for an entire year (about $42 per month). Every contribution helps us expand the reach of our programs and support the children who need it most.

Why It Matters

Did you know only 33% of fourth graders in Iowa are proficient in reading? That’s why programs like Power Read are so critical. Last year, 97% of our students improved their enthusiasm for reading, and 88% read outside of required class time.

Together, we can change these statistics and give every child the tools they need to succeed.
