COVID-19 Updates

Below are the latest updates from Executive Director Karen Ligas regarding COVID-19 and Everybody Wins! Iowa programming:

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19)
Update April 17, 2020

As of today, April 17, 2020, Governor Reynolds has closed all schools for the remainder of the school year. Therefore, our in-person Power Read school year programming will not continue. In response, we are shifting our focus to providing reading resources for our students as we are able. Please stay tuned for opportunities to support us as we transition to a new model and attempt to reach as many of our students as possible. And please reach out to me with any questions or concerns you may have (statedirector@everybodywinsiowa.org). Thanks so much for your ongoing service and support. We hope you are all staying safe and healthy!

Sincerely,

Karen Ligas, Executive Director

Power Read programming is on hiatus effective March 16-April 13, 2020

Thank you to all our dedicated volunteers, students, staff, school and community partners! So far this school year we have 611 Power Read volunteer mentors serving 691 students in 9 school districts in Central Iowa. Together we have completed over 101,836 pages and 2,075 books during our one-to-one shared reading sessions. And we have given away more than 3,400 free books to children. All of this is possible because of your support and commitment.

Based on recent news and information we have decided to cease all Power Read programming until Monday, April 13, 2020. We want to ensure a safe environment for all students, mentors, and our staff. With DMPS extending their spring break and last night’s request by Governor Reynolds for all schools to close for 4 weeks, we are also ceasing our Power Read programming.
The Board and I will be reviewing this decision on a regular basis and will communicate any new information as soon as possible. We want to protect and promote the health of all individuals impacted by our programming and will continue to assess and inform you as much as possible. Staff will be in contact with volunteers to confirm the date we will resume our programming.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support of EWI and our students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Karen Ligas, Executive Director
